Champions Crowned at the 2019 US Youth Soccer ODP West Championships

PHOENIX (Jan. 8, 2019) -- The 2019 US Youth Soccer ODP West Championships came to an exciting end on Monday as four different states claimed titles at Reach 11 Sports Complex in Phoenix. Cal South lead the way with five titles and Arizona claimed four titles. Cal North captured two titles and Washington won one.

The four-day tournament featured teams of elite players in the 2002-07 age groups, from the West Region, which includes Alaska, Arizona, California North, California South, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

Match Highlights:

2002 Boys

Cal South defended its title thanks to a penalty shootout victory over Oregon, 3-1. The shutout victory was the fourth total for Cal South during the weekend.

"Feels so good to be back-to-back having Adrian (Gallardo) go out there to make big saves and to have Andy (Valverde) put in the final one and we all get to celebrate," said Cal South's Casey Lind. "I didn't wait for the final whistle I was running to celebrate."

2002 Girls

Arizona bested Cal South, 4-3, in a back-and-forth match that featured a hat-trick from Arizona's Mollie Griswold. She scored the opening goal in the 4th minute and Cal South answered the deficit with an equalizer from Gabriella Guzman in the 17th minute. This would be the theme throughout the match as Arizona's Madison Cullian scored in the 24th minute and Cal South's Olivia Sekimot scored the first of her two goals in the 30th minute. Griswold slotted home a penalty in the 44th minute and Sekimot answered in the 47th minute. It took until overtime to settle this one as Griswold's third and final goal ended up as the game-winner for the 02 Girls title.

"It feels amazing I can hardly believe it," said Arizona's Rilee Rottweiler. "All I felt was excitement and it was good to come together as one group and to scream and let it out."

2003 Boys

Playing against home side Arizona, who were the defending champions, didn't faze Cal South as they rolled to a 2-0 victory. After a scoreless first half, Rafael Paner Ren opened up the scoring in the 61st minute and Alejandro Solis put the game on ice in the 70th minute with a goal of his own.

"It was fun playing with the boys," said Cal South's Joshan Darji. "We have been practicing for a couple of months and to come out here and play as a team is great. To play against other teams was a great opportunity for all the people here."

2003 Girls

Cal South defended its title thanks to a 4-1 victory over Colorado. Sophia Aragon, Aylin Gonzalez, Kaylee McClellan, and Lauryn White all scored for Cal South and Katy Coffin scored the lone goal for Colorado.

"This is my first year and I really appreciate the high level," said Cal South goalkeeper Joshlyn Aguirre. " I've been able to meet a lot of different players and it's really fun to play with them and their different styles."

2004 Boys

Arizona defeated Oregon 3-0. Blake Bernal opened the scoring for Arizona when he slotted home a penalty in the 17th minute. Just three minutes later, Vladimir Stevanovic scored his 7th goal in the tournament. Arizona put the match out of reach thanks to Charloe Moran's goal in the 43rd minute. The title capped off an impressive weekend for Arizona who didn't drop any points while scoring 17 goals and conceding two.

"It's a great feeling to be a champion," said Bernal. "We played well throughout the whole weekend. We had some great performances throughout the team. We were just really happy to win because most of this team has been together these past two years and we have been unable to get through the final to win it so today has been great."

2004 Girls

Cal South claimed the final championship for their state when they defeated Washington 3-1. In the 2018 ODP West Championships, Washington defeated Cal South in the semifinals en route to winning the 04 age group. Cal South's Mia Rodriguez scored the opening goal in the 7th minute and Denise Camarena added one just before the half in the 32nd minute. After the break, Cal South's Amanda Perez put the game out of reach for Washington when scored found the back of the net in the 65th minute. Washington was able to pull on back when Ashley Kirschner scored in the 68th minute but it wasn't enough as Cal South emerged victoriously.

"I am overexcited," said Camarena. "It is an amazing experience to play against other great teams and to win it all is amazing".

2005 Boys

In-state rivals Cal South and Cal North squared off for the 14U Boys title. After an extremely tight match, Cal North emerged victorious, 2-1. Braxton Fleming and Osvaldo Real scored for Cal North while Kevin Bravo scored for Cal South.

"This is my first year and it is amazing for us," said Fleming. "We worked so hard yesterday and the day before to get to this moment. Even today was a hard game but we wanted it very much and it was great."

2005 Girls

Arizona claimed the 14U Girls title in a 2-0 victory over Southern Nevada. Arizona's Brooke Fabri had a team-high nine goals heading into this match and she wasted no time putting her mark on the match with a goal in the first minute. Arizona doubled its lead when Nathalie Lewis scored in the 36th minute. Southern Nevada's Andrea Leyva was able to cut the lead in half in the 57th minute but it wasn't enough as Arizona's defense shut down Southern Nevada to close out the match.

"It feels really good because we all worked really hard to get to this moment," said Arizona's Ella Rustand. "It also feels good that we accomplished this as a team."

2006 Boys

In a tight match, Arizona defeated Cal North 2-0. Izahi Amparo scored his third goal of the tournament in the 16th minute and Kyen Wallace scored the game-winner in stoppage time when he got on the end of a cross on the back post after spiriting from midfield. The win was the fourth shutout for Arizona in five matches.

"It feels amazing," said Amparo. "We worked hard to get here and the team did really well together."

2006 Girls

Cal South ended their tournament run with another shutout victory. The fourth and final shutout came against Hawaii in a 2-0 victory in the 13U Girls title match. Sydney Osborn and Sarah Spears scored for Cal South who scored 26 goals and conceded just one goal.

2007 Boys

Cal North ended their tournament run with an impressive 6-1 victory over Hawaii. Cal North wasted no time in this match scoring early and often. Demetrius Egorerua, Adama Fall, Erardo Pelayo, and Allan Zamora Hidalgo all scored before the break. Hawaii's Bernardo Araujo scored just after halftime to pull one back. However, three minutes later, Zamora Hidalgo scored his second and Aaron Singh scored the sixth and final goal.

"It feels great to be out here playing soccer and having fun," said Cal North's Preston Kao. "Playing with my teammates was fun, enjoyable and memorable."

2007 Girls

In another high-scoring match, Washington defeated Cal North for the 12U Girls title. Washington jumped out to an impressive lead thanks for early goals from Deandra Dan, Amelia Bray, and Chloe McCoy. After the break, Cal North's Maryam Ladkani scored the first for her side and just moments after this goal McCoy scored her second. Ladkani scored again in the 52nd minute and Alden Hofstede scored in stoppage time to bring the deficit back to one goal. However, there wasn't enough time to complete the comeback.

"It was really cool because we worked super hard all weekend," Washington's Addison Stendera. "We were super strong in the championship match and it feels really awesome to win."
