ATLANTA (Feb. 23, 2021) — The US Youth Soccer Piedmont Conference 2020-21 season continued for the 13U Boys and Girls Divisions over the weekend, as 16 Georgia and North Carolina teams competed at Arizona Ave Soccer Fields in Atlanta.

This was the first weekend event where 13U teams from Georgia joined in the conference action since the 2020-21 season began. Looking back at this weekend, there were a number of matchups that saw teams put in strong performances to get victories and move up in the standings.

In the 13U Girls age group, Georgia Impact SC 08G Elite (GA) got off to a great start with two wins over the weekend. The team’s head coach, Robert Roddie — who is also the club’s Director of Coaching for the girls teams — talked about what he attributes to his team’s early success this season.

“The biggest part of the team’s success was their focus and work ethic,” Roddie said. “The entire team worked together in defense, helping us limit the number of chances the opposition had on our goal.

“It is a huge plus to get the points on the table early. In my experience through National League in other age groups, anyone can beat anybody, so you cannot rely on picking up points in future games. This is a great start and confidence builder for our girls and we hope to continue that form going in to next weekend.”

Roddie also talked about what it means to his team to play in the Piedmont Conference.

“The experience as a whole is huge,” Roddie said. “It is first a big reward for our players’ efforts in the Fall to be promoted from our state league to National League. They are now able to compete against the best teams in the region, where they have to play to the best of their ability every weekend.

“The most important part of our Georgia Impact’s love for National League is that it is merit-based, we fight to avoid relegation and also play to earn our place in the Regional and National Championships. This is a great motivational tool for our players and keeps them working hard week to week.”

In the 13U Boys age group, Highland FC 08B Red (NC) had a successful weekend outing by picking up two wins in Atlanta. Highland FC 08B Red head coach Jason ReMine talked about how his team approached the games going into the weekend and what it means to the team to pick up wins in the beginning of the season.

“I thought we went into the weekend with the correct mindset, and we really were committed to doing the little things needed for success,” ReMine said. “We were good in possession, created a lot of chances, and were able to score some absolutely fantastic goals.

“It is obviously great to get off to a quality start. We had had an up and down first weekend of play as we dealt with some injuries and an increased level of competition, but we were able to bounce back with two very strong performances in Atlanta.”

ReMine also talked about his team earning their way into the Piedmont Conference.

“This was a goal that the players had to begin in the fall, and it is wonderful that were able to earn this opportunity. It will be very beneficial to be able to test ourselves against some of the top teams from North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.”

The next Piedmont Conference hosted event for the 13U teams will be on Feb. 27-28 in Irmo, S.C., at the SCUFC West Soccer Complex. The event will include 15 teams, as Georgia teams travel to South Carolina.
