University High School Teams Host Pre-Season TOPSoccer Buddy Course

University High School Teams Host Pre-Season TOPSoccer Buddy Course

Indiana Soccer Director of Coaching Education, Steve Franklin and ISL Commissioner, George Perry recently spent a late August morning leading a 2.5-hour TOPSoccer Buddy course for both the Boys and Girls High School soccer teams at University High School in Carmel. Coaches Wes Priest and Chris Morrison set up the course to help teach the student-athletes that soccer should be, and is, an inclusive sport for all.

Students and coaches spent the 2.5 hours discussing why they played soccer; activities they enjoyed when training; a greater understanding of the mental and physical challenges some of their peers have; and ways in which they could facilitate the same activities they enjoyed with them.

TOPSoccer is a community-based training and team placement program for athletes with disabilities, organized by youth soccer association volunteers. The program is designed to bring the opportunity of learning and playing soccer to any players, age 8 and older, who have a mental or physical disability. Our goal is [TOP Soccer] to enable the thousands of young athletes with disabilities to become valued and successful members of the Indiana Soccer & US Youth Soccer families.

TOPSoccer was formed to perpetuate the Indiana Soccer & US Youth Soccer mission statement which is, in part, "to foster the physical, mental and emotional growth and development of America’s youth through the sport of soccer at all levels of age and competition." There are thousands of children with disabilities who need and can be provided with, the opportunity to play soccer through the TOPSoccer program.
